What were the Crusades?

The Crusades were religiously motivated military campaigns launched by Western European Christians to reclaim Jerusalem and other holy sites in the Levant from Muslim rulers, beginning in 1095. The call by Pope Urban II at Clermont mobilized knights and common folk alike, framing the pursuit as a sacred duty and promising spiritual rewards. The First Crusade managed to capture Jerusalem in 1099 and established Crusader states, sparking further expeditions over the next two centuries. While some Crusades aimed to defend pilgrims or retake lost territory, the overarching aim was to reclaim sacred places from Islamic control. The period around 1095 to 1204 captures the early Crusading era, including notable events like the Fourth Crusade, which diverted to Constantinople, showing how political and religious motives intertwined. The other options describe events or trends that aren’t what the Crusades were about.
